Love Emergent Social Justice Initiative is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit organization which supports small, community-basedorganizations. We are 100% volunteer-run and do not have employees; however we are always looking for volunteers, donors, and supporters! For more information, please contact us at loveemergent@groupmail.com.
The organization was founded in 2013 and first began supporting the organization of Osivela wa Yesu in 2014. It is founded by Tanya and Jason Singh. Tanya served in the Peace Corps from 2010 to 2012 and worked with Osivela wa Yesu during her service. Since 2014, the organization has contributed to our mission through the following:
In 1992, the Mozambican civil war came to an end. One year later, a young missionary, Bernadette Jansen came to Mozambique from South Africa. She began to work in the town of Mocuba as a social services missionary. She recruited several community members and began a preschool and orphan out-care-center called Osivela wa Yesu. Over the years, the organization grew; expanding its services to orphaned infants and widows.
Later, Osivela wa Yesu increased its focus on public health, in particular the high rates mortality and morbidity from diarrheal diseases, malaria, and HIV. In 2016, the life expectancy in Mozambique was 58 years. Their response was to promote health and nutrition in the community, to closely monitor the health of orphaned children and their extended families, and provide referrals and motor bike transportation to the local clinic .
Mozambique also has a high HIV prevalence with an estimated 12.5% of Mozambicans aged 15-49 being HIV positive. It is also estimated that a staggering 170,000 children under the age of 15 have HIV. In 2011, Osivela wa Yesu began strongly responding to the HIV epidemic through providing preventioneducation in the community and encouraging testing. The organization has also expanded its services to local youth through a variety of programs including theater, health clubs, life skills groups, and reading clubs in the new library. Love Emergent has wired donations to pay for food, needed school and clinic repairs, school supplies, youth programs, home repairs for orphans, and public health projects.

The mission of the Love Emergent Social Justice Initiative is to provide financial, volunteer, consultative and spiritual support to local community-based organizations. We believe that community needs such as education, health, violence reduction and general developmental needs can be effectively addressed by local, community based organizations. We also believe that through cross-cultural and cross-ethnic collaboration we can help reduce the societal barriers which contribute to discrimination, violence, and poverty. Finally, we believe that it is a part of our mission to spread love and hope through organizing events, sharing stories, and advocating for justice. Jesus taught us that the greatest commandments are to love the Lord and to love others. Our mission is therefore simple: to love people through supporting local organizations as they work to promote peace, health and prosperity in their communities.
